South East Tourism Businesses do their bit for the Planet with a New Energy Efficiency Guide

Tourism South East (TSE) and their main sponsor EDF Energy have joined forces to produce a new energy saving guide to help tourism businesses reduce costs and improve their environmental performance.

The guide offers organisations practical advice using simple, easy-to-implement tips to help businesses follow the greener path by cutting down on energy use.

Green issues are recognised as important by the tourism industry. An attractive urban or rural environment is an essential ingredient for an area to succeed as a tourism destination. Tourism organisations are expected to care for the environment in which they operate and to adopt the principles of sustainable tourism development. The guide recognises this need and focuses on three main areas; Saving Energy, Saving Water and Reducing and Recycling Waste.

The booklet guides businesses step-by-step through a variety of cost-saving processes with clear, simple instructions on how to change your business for the better, identifying the many advantages of going green, as well as signposting readers to key contacts for further help and information.

Paul Jeffries, TSE's Senior Development Manager said, "With world energy prices rising and wholesale markets continuing to be volatile, increased oil and gas prices are being passed on to the end user, resulting in businesses seeing a drop in their margins. By taking the actions identified in the guide, tourism businesses can reduce fuel bills, improve environmental performance and enhance their bottom line. Whatever the business, there is potential to save money through careful energy management. You do not have to be a committed environmentalist to improve performance - just taking a few simple, cheap and effective measures can help."
