Self-Catering Sector
Self-catering in the form of holiday cottages and flats, is an important component of local economies, particularly in rural and coastal areas. It has a particular relevance in the light of the ongoing difficulties faced by the farming community, the related pressures for diversification and the general economic plight of many rural communities.
Data on the supply and demand for self catering accommodation has historically been limited. In 2002 the former Southern Tourist Board completed a study to fill this information gap for the Southern Region.
To complete the picture of demand, supply and future requirements for the self catering sector across the enlarged TSE region, a pan regional study was completed in 2005.
The primary purposes of these studies are to provide local authorities, other agencies and potential investors with better supply and market data on which to base policies, plans and intervention activities.
The 2005 study provided:
- an update of strategic level trends in both demand for, and supply of, self catering accommodation in the region;
- an overview of the performance of the self catering sector across the region and where possible drawing out variation in performance by location and product type;
- an indication of the need for new product development, by location and product type;
- an evaluation of the key drivers to success impacting upon the self catering sector.
