Common Themes
Analysis of the work of the sub group's research has identified nine common themes which are to be developed by the regional partners.
Values linked to the London 2012 Games
The development of Mind, Body & Soul through an attitudinal change towards greater participation and engagement must be pursued. This might be the playing of more sport or involvement in other cultural activities inspired by the motivational factors of the London 2012 Games.
Profile / Image
An opportunity to showcase the South East as a world class region as the eyes of the world focus on this country. Specifically it provides the opportunity to attract major events from the sporting calendar and as part of the Cultural Olympiad.
Quality of Destination
A chance to improve the region's built environment through either new or enhanced facilities in particular multi use environments to encourage participation by the whole community. Equally important is the need to use the London 2012 Games and the prospect of international visitors to improve the reliability and structure of public transport system which again will provide a long lasting legacy for the region's population in their daily lives.
Going For Green
This reflects the pledge in the candidate file to create a legacy that will set new standards for sustainable development in the community by improving health, environment and the quality of life.
This might include upgrading the region's landscaping and a major initiative to remove graffiti but also create business opportunities for local firms wishing to bid for London 2012 related contracts that have an environmental impact and outcome. Finally it is to engender individual responsibilities to be "greener" in ones everyday life.
Commercial Opportunities
The London 2012 Games will provide major business opportunities for South East businesses to tender for the contracts that will be let to deliver the Games. We are working with other RDA's and the London 2012 organising committee to establish a way of engaging UK businesses to improve the chances of successful tendering.
Benefits of Health Gain
Measures must be undertaken to capitalise on the inspiration of the London 2012 Games to create a healthier region - leading to improved workplace health which in turn will lead to increased productivity levels and reduced strain on the NHS and other support services.
Work Force Development
This relates to both paid and unpaid skills development. The London 2012 Games will require numerous sectors and disciplines to deliver and service them, both directly and in-directly. Industries will also need to attract new and develop existing employees on the back of the 2012 Games and the opportunities they offer.
70,000 volunteers will be needed during the Games period and volunteering provides people with the chance to develop skills and increase self confidence which can be transferred to their paid employment situations.
Citizenship / Common Endeavour
Closely linked with the Olympic Values is the development of citizenship and the chance to develop collective responsibility and social values. This exemplifies communities working together for common good and goals.
Access (Equity)
The Paralympic Games will highlight equal opportunities for people with disabilities and this should be reflected in addressing access and equity issues both physical and intellectually. Programmes and interventions aimed at tackling social exclusion can be implemented to increase the entitlement of all to enjoy equal participation.
