Promoting Public Transport

...getting your guests out of their cars...

Promoting access by public transport, of which a good network exists in the South East, can encourage more visitors without more traffic and pollution.

Encouraging visitors to arrive by and use public transport can help both the environment and the community as exhaust fumes and congestion are reduced. The visual intrusion and noise of vehicles can also detract from visitor's enjoyment. Furthermore, increased visitor use and demand for services can improve the frequency and viability of services for local people.

Persuading visitors to give up the convenience of their cars will not be easy but if they are made aware of the opportunities and facilities to do so, they will. Carefully presented information on using public transport and the benefits to the local environment and community really helps.

Why not try

  • Providing good clear information on alternative transport options. This could just be a copy of the most recent bus and timetables.
  • Informing guests where they can hire bicycles or investigate collaborating with other local businesses to purchase some bicycles for visitors to use. This can encourage visitors to use their car less once they have arrived.
  • Raising awareness of opportunities to travel locally by providing routes and information. Suggest day trips in the surrounding area, to a pub, neighbouring village or nearby attraction using public transport, walking or cycling.
  • Sending timetables with a booking confirmation or enquiry and offer to collect visitors from a local station.
