Food Safety Law

New food safety laws came into force on 1st January 2006 which affect all food retailers including B&Bs, hotels, restaurants and attractions with food outlets.

There are few differences between the basic provisions of the old and new legislation, however, there is now a duty for "food preparers" to record and demonstrate what they have done to make the food they serve safe. This is done with a "Food Safety Management System" administered by the management of the establishment.

To assist small businesses the Food Standards Agency (FSA) has produced a free food safety management pack entitled "Safer food, better business". The pack includes a self-audit of food safety issues as well as a diary to continue to record essential food safety information. When complete, these two elements will enable businesses to comply with the new legislation and can help with staff training and development.

More information on the new food safety laws and copies of the "Safer food, better business" pack are available from the Food Standards Agency.
